Adopting a Bullmastiff

All the Bullmastiffs given up to us that we re-home come to us for various reasons, to name a few; Divorce or partnership break-ups, Hospitalisation, moving home or moving abroad, moving into a smaller home, working schedules have changed, arrival of a new baby, purchased as a cute puppy and now does not get on with other dogs in the home, or person/s did not realise how big the dog grows, dog is left on its own too many hours while owner is working…. these are just a few of the many reasons.

It is our job then to find and match the most suitable home and owner for the dog, and that the dog is suitably matched with the person/s.

We treat each individual Bullmastiff for re-homing as if they were our very own dog and as such, we want the best possible home for him/her. As a dog is for life, and a long term commitment not as a fashion accessory or whim. If you have previous experience of owning a bullmastiff, please tell us on the application form as this does help tremendously in our decision to accept you as an adopter and this can place you further up the waiting list. Proof of experience and knowing the breed is a great benefit. All Bullmastiffs adopted must be kept as a family pet and treated as part of the family, as they are a very sociable dog and thrive upon human companionship. Bullmastiffs love being with people and going wherever you go.

They must not be chained up outside or kennelled outside as these dogs love being in the home. If you want to kennel a dog outside possibly you should think about getting a horse or pony! They can never be given away, sold or be used for breeding. All reasonable care must be taken with the dog so that they receive proper veterinary care and treatment where appropriate, along with vaccinations, and worming when required. Getting correct Pet Insurance for the dog is highly recommended.

If for any reason you cannot look after the dog for whatever reason the dog must be returned to B.A.R.K. at your expense. You must always ensure that there is fresh water and food available, and that the dogs sleeping area is clean and comfortable. Correct grooming and daily exercise is necessary, making sure the dogs ears and eyes are clean daily are also necessary.

Waiting time

We do try to match each dog to the best of our ability with the information that you have given to us on your adoption application. We will only re-home a dog into a home environment.

Please be advised, there is always a waiting list for dogs and that you will need to be placed on our waiting list. A lot depends in your requirements in what you require in a dog and your home circumstances to match with the dog's requirements as to how long you wait. Flexibility in the dog's age and sex that you wish for can reduce the waiting time.

If you currently have a dog in the home presently, it's always best to match them with the opposite sex, not the same sex. Some dogs are more suited to being without other dogs present in the home. We will never re-home or consider re-homing a dog with another dog of the same sex in the home.

Adoption fee

All the dogs have an adoption fee which is payable. This goes towards the running and organisation of the rescue and helps us with travel expenses with collecting and delivering the dog. Any health care he or she may require, boarding and or foster care fees we have to bear.

Each Adoption fee is based upon these and the age of the dog, plus if any medications are required possibly as ongoing care this will then be reflected in the dogs reduced adoption fee. There are no refunds on adoption fees.

Home Checks

When possible we will conduct a home check after receiving and assessing your adoption application if successful. We will then telephone you to make suitable arrangements to us both as to date and time.

If you reside outside our represented areas, we will advise you that we will require an independent home check to be conducted by yourself either through the RSPCA or NCDL or other recognised organisation plus a veterinary reference. If possible emailed pictures of your home ground floor and gardens can sometimes add grade to your application.
